GOTHIC
REVUE
Every song on this disc is like an aged fine wine. To
be sipped occasionally and cherished as something that
you will never experience again. And then you can do it
once more. - Azrael
STARVOX
"...captivating
and extremely moving to listen to, her voice is constantly
riddled with an intense amount of feeling."
DARK REALMS (USA)
We did not forget the dark ethereal music fans this month.
Once again, a highly artistic package arrived containing
the sophomore release of Dawn Desiree's Dancing, Dreaming
Longing.... This release is a tapestry that combines soprano
vocals, medieval influences, electro-pop, world beat and
ethereal piano stylizations. This release takes Desiree
into the same league of Loreena McKennit and it is high
time the rest of the world noticed as well. The lyrics
are heartfelt and introspective without being a dalliance
towards the mawkish. Even with the incorporation of electro
dance tracks, the work is dark and gentle enough for ethereal
fans while being beat-laden for club kids. Don't be surprised
to hear the tracks "Revenge" or "Plastic Girl" emanating
shortly within your favorite club. Dancing, Dreaming,
Longing... is the type of recording one needs to have
around after an emotional storm and the healing has begun.
Highly Recommended! - Mike Ventarola
GRAVE CONCERNS (USA)
Woohoo, some true opera and classicaly oriented music!
It's about time we starting getting some more good classical
music in the promo sector around here. Outside of Amy
Song, a simply amazing pianist who must be seen to be
believed, nothing much has been going on in the world
of classical from what I can tell that hasn't been done
a thousand times before. Dawn Desiree definitely brings
a nice twist and element to the field, though, with her
lightning fast piano playing on the intro track, light
tribal, techno (on occasion) and trip hop elements on the
percussion, soaring soprano vocals and her wide range
of classical influences. Not to mention she's a redhead,
and we need some redheads with talent since Tori Amos
has become little more than coffeehouse music anymore.
Her vocals are the star of the show though, never falling
into the oft-overdone and studio made ethereal effects,
preferring instead to use a from-the-throat, controlled
operatic style. It's really really difficult to pick a
favorite on here, since each one has it's own kind of
dreamworld, but I really recommend this CD, esp. for those
tired of the same old, reverbed-to-hell ethereal out there
these days. Or for anyone in general who just wants to
stand in awe of what operatic training can do.
Rating: 10/10
COLLECTED SOUNDS WEBZINE (Sweden)
Former Rain Fell Within singer Dawn Desiree' has created
an impeccable solo record. Mark and Michael Riddick assist
her on various instruments. The gorgeous opener "Waltz
of the Afterlife" showcases her angelic voice to its finest
effect. "Dance in Time" has echoes of Tori Amos circa
"Boys for Pele" and adds layers of its own ethereal kind.
Its beauty is exquisite and painfully real. "Revenge"
is more aimed at the dance-floor and succeeds in getting
there while still retaining the airy feel of the other
tracks. "Plastic Girl" is hauntingly sparse and has a
sound not a million miles removed from Bjork's "Vespertine".
This album is a beautifully packaged work of art. It should
seal Dawn Desiree's reputation as one of the best singers
around.
